My wife and I were in Brazil, staying in the small town of Abadania for a couple of weeks. Our apartment faced onto a beautiful garden and walkway. The window in the front room framed a flowering tree across the narrow yard.
I often sat looking out the open window, enjoying the breeze, and watching the shifting light and shadows. It was a form of meditation. Whenever I struggled with my writing I’d look out the window at the tree. The image of the open window and the tree beyond reminded me that I needed to open myself and take the time to allow the beauty of the moment wash over me.
Thankfully it wasn’t a subtle message: subtlety is often lost on me.
