Most Important Speech in American History

Senator Bernie Sanders on the Stump 02/29/2016

About three hours ago, Senator Bernie Sanders gave the most important speech in American History. His speech is unlike those of the Founders who challenged the colonists to envision a free unified people or Lincoln’s who drew the best from Americans to defeat slavery and kept the United States united. Sanders’ words surpass FDR’s which pulled the United States out of the greatest financial disaster, up until then, and led our nation to victory in WWII.

I believe Sanders’ speech is the most important in U.S. history because he spoke about the actual destruction of the United States, its democratic values, and the erasure of 244 years of sacrifices made by millions to create, improve, and protect our beloved nation.

He clearly described Trump’s threat to our nation and democracy. Sanders called on all Americans, regardless of party affiliation or political philosophy to join and protect Democracy and Rule of Law by ensuring a free, fair, and credible presidential election. He called on Congress and all state legislatures to guard against voter intimidation and suppression, and to make certain that all votes are counted, including mail-in.

Senator Sanders provided overwhelming evidence that claims of voter fraud were, themselves fraudulent. Quoting voting experts and high-ranking officials both Democrats and Republicans, and numerous voter fraud investigations, including Trump’s own commission, Sanders clearly shows that there is no wide-spread voter fraud now or in modern history.

Rather, all this evidence points to a single fact. Trump has no intention of allowing a free and fair election and that he will use anything at his disposal, lies and illegal actions, to preserve his power, regardless of what the American people say.

Here is the prepared text from Senator Sander’s speech:

This country faces an unprecedented set of crises. We are struggling with a pandemic that has already cost us over 200,000 lives.

We have an economy in which we have a grotesque level of income and wealth inequality, where the middle class is being decimated, where millions of workers have lost their jobs and half of our people continue to work paycheck to paycheck — many for starvation wages.

We are living in the moment when climate change is ravaging this planet, leading to massive fires on the West Coast, drought and unprecedented levels of extreme weather disturbances all across the globe.

We are the only major country on earth not to guarantee healthcare to all people as a right, over 90 million Americans are uninsured or under-insured, and we pay by far the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs.

All of these issues, and others, are enormously important and should be the issues that are being debated in this campaign. But, today, I’m not going to talk about any of them.

What I am going to talk about is something that, in my wildest dreams, I never thought I would be discussing.  And that is the need to make certain that the President of the United States, if he loses this election, will abide by the will of the voters and leave office peacefully.

What I will be discussing today is the danger that this country faces from a president who is a pathological liar, who has strong authoritarian tendencies, who neither understands nor respects our constitution and who is prepared to undermine American democracy in order to stay in power.

With less than 6 weeks left to go in this campaign it is my fervent hope that all Americans — Democrats, Republicans, independents, progressives, moderates, conservatives — come together to defend American democracy, our constitution and the rule of law. We must ensure, in this unprecedented moment in American history that this is an election that is free and fair, an election in which voters are not intimidated, an election in which all votes are counted and an election in which the loser accepts the results.

This is not just an election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.  This is an election between Donald Trump and democracy – and democracy must win.

The United States is the oldest continuous democracy in the modern world. We held elections in the middle of a Civil War in 1864. We held free and fair elections during World War I, during the Great Depression, and during World War II. After all of those elections, held in extremely difficult circumstances, the loser acknowledged defeat and the winner was inaugurated and took office.  That is what America is all about.  That’s what democracy is all about.

But today, under Donald Trump, we have a president who has little respect for our constitution or the rule of law. Today, that peaceful transition of power, the bedrock of American democracy, is being threatened like never before.

I am not in the habit of quoting former President Ronald Reagan, but I think something that he said in his first inaugural address makes the point about how important — how precious — is this part of our heritage. I quote: “The orderly transfer of authority as called for in the Constitution routinely takes place as it has for almost two centuries and few of us stop to think how unique we really are. In the eyes of many in the world, this every 4-year ceremony we accept as normal is nothing less than a miracle.” Unquote.

Protecting this “orderly transfer of authority” as President Reagan characterized it, this miracle, is absolutely essential if we together — all of us, Republicans, Democrats, Independents — want to keep faith with the American ideals we hold so dear and with the sacrifices that so many made in order to protect our democracy.

And in that regard I think it is terribly important that we actually listen to, and take seriously, what Donald Trump is saying.

Several weeks ago, speaking at the Republican National Convention, Trump said, and I quote, “The only way they can take this election away from us is if this is a rigged election.” What is remarkable about that statement is that he made it at a time when almost every national poll had him behind and when he was trailing in polls in most battleground states.

Think about what that statement means. What he is saying is that if he wins the election, that’s great. But if he loses, it’s rigged, because the only way, the only way, he can lose is if it’s rigged. And if it’s rigged, then he is not leaving office.  Heads I win. Tails you lose. In other words, in Trump’s mind, there is no conceivable way that he should leave office.

And just last night Donald Trump went even further down the path of authoritarianism by being the first president in the history of this country to refuse to commit to a peaceful transition of power if he loses the election.

When asked by a reporter in the White House briefing room: “Win, lose or draw in this election, will you commit here today for a peaceful transferal of power after the election?” Trump responded:

“We’re going to have to see what happens.  You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots, and the ballots are a disaster.  We want to get rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very peaceful — there won’t be a transfer, frankly. There will be a continuation.

That’s not his choice.  That’s for the American people to determine.  Let us be very clear.  There is nothing in our constitution or in our laws that give Donald Trump the privilege of deciding whether or not he will step aside if he loses.  In the United States the president does not determine who can or cannot vote and what ballots will be counted.  That may be what his friend Putin does in Russia.  It may be what is done in other authoritarian countries.  But it is not and will not be done in America.  This is a democracy.

I do understand that Donald Trump is a billionaire, or so he says.  I do understand that he was born to a very wealthy family and, from his earliest days, was able to get anything he wanted because his family was rich and his family was powerful.  I do understand that when you’re rich and you’re powerful you don’t  have to pay taxes like ordinary people and that it’s easy for you to avoid the military draft.  I do understand that when you’re rich and you’re powerful you can buy politicians and get hundreds of millions of dollars in corporate welfare for your real estate empire.

But this I also understand.  No matter how rich and powerful you may be, no matter how arrogant and narcissistic you may be, no matter how much you think you can get anything you want, let me make this clear to Donald Trump: Too many people have fought and died to defend American democracy.  You are not going to destroy it.  The American people will not allow that to happen.

Despite all of the evidence, Trump continues to be obsessed with the belief that there is massive voter fraud in this country.

In 2017, after he won the presidency, Trump insisted that he would have won the popular vote, which he lost by 3 million votes, if, quote “millions of illegal votes had not been cast.” There is absolutely no evidence of that being true. In fact, it is totally preposterous to believe that millions of votes, or any significant number of votes at all, were cast illegally. This is an assertion supported by no one. Not Democratic officials.  Not Republican officials. No one.  And yet that is what Trump said after he won.

There have been numerous studies done on the issue of voter fraud in our country. They have all concluded essentially the same thing.  Voter fraud in the United States of America is extremely rare.

A study by Dartmouth University found no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2016 election.

An article in the New York Times from December 18, 2016 stated: “In an election in which more than 137.7 million Americans cast ballots, election and law enforcement officials in 26 states and the District of Columbia — Democratic-leaning, Republican-leaning and in-between — said that so far they knew of no credible allegations of fraudulent voting. Officials in another eight states said they knew of only one allegation … In Georgia, where more than 4.1 million ballots were cast, officials said they had opened 25 inquiries into “suspicious voting or election-related activity.”  But inquiries to all 50 states (every one but Kansas responded) found no states that reported indications of widespread fraud.”

A report by the Brennan Center for Justice reviewed elections that had been meticulously studied for voter fraud, and found incident rates between 0.0003 percent and 0.0025 percent. The report concluded that it is more likely that an American, quote, “will be struck by lightning than that he will impersonate another voter at the polls,” unquote.

Even the conservative Heritage Foundation, which maintains a database on election fraud, could only find 143 criminal convictions of mail in voter fraud out of 250 million mail-in votes cast over the past 20 years, a rate of 0.00006%.

But you don’t have to trust me on this issue.  Benjamin Ginsburg, one of the leading Republican experts on elections, a man who served as national counsel to the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign, a man who played a major role for the Republican Party in the 2000 Florida recount, and who co-chaired the bipartisan 2013 Presidential Commission on Election Administration, recently wrote in the Washington Post, and I quote, “The truth is that after decades of looking for illegal voting, there’s no proof of widespread fraud. At most, there are isolated incidents — by both Democrats and Republicans. Elections are not rigged,” unquote.

Let me repeat from one of the Republican Party’s leading experts on elections: “The truth is that after decades of looking for illegal voting, there’s no proof of widespread fraud. At most, there are isolated incidents — by both Democrats and Republicans. Elections are not rigged.”

And if even the statement of Mr. Ginsburg is not good enough for you, here is what the Trump administration’s own voting integrity commission reported.  According to an analysis of administration documents by the Associated Press, Trump’s commission uncovered, quote “no evidence to support claims of widespread voter fraud,” unquote, and disbanded in 2018.

Even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tamped down concerns about mail-in ballots last month, saying, and I quote, “Many parts of our country vote by mail. Oregon, Washington and Colorado have voted by mail for years.”

And yet we have a president who calls mail in ballots “a hoax” and “a scam.”

Trump’s strategy to delegitimize this election and to stay in office if he loses is not complicated. Finding himself behind in many polls, he is attempting massive voter suppression. He and his Republican colleagues are doing everything they can to make it harder and harder for people to vote. In addition, he is sowing the seeds of chaos, confusion and conspiracy theories by casting doubt on the integrity of this election and, if he loses, justifying why he should remain in office.

In an interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News, Trump refused to say that he would leave office if he lost. Asked to give a direct answer on whether he would accept the election results, Trump refused. He said, quote, “I have to see. No, I’m not going to just say yes. I’m not going to say no, and I didn’t last time either.” Pretty much what he said yesterday.

In the middle of a pandemic Trump made clear that he wants to defund the Postal Service in order to limit the use of mail in ballots. In an interview on August 13, discussing a possible deal for a relief package that would have funded the post office, Trump let the cat out of the bag by admitting that, quote “If we don’t make a deal, that means they don’t get the money. That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting; they just can’t have it.”

In other words, what Trump is saying to tens of millions of Americans is that at a time when over 200,000 people have already died from the coronavirus, you have a choice: You can either risk your health or even your life by walking into a voting booth or you can’t vote.  How disgusting is that?

Amazingly, at the very same time Trump is making completely baseless allegations about voter fraud, last month he urged his supporters in North Carolina to try voting twice, which is a felony.

In order to advance his plan for mass voter suppression, the Trump campaign filed a lawsuit in Nevada, which fortunately was dismissed, challenging the state’s mail-in voting laws.

In July, Trump used false claims of voter fraud to propose delaying this year’s election, which he does not have the power to do. This was so outrageous that Steven Calabresi, the co-founder of the conservative Federalist Society, wrote that it was, quote “grounds for the president’s immediate impeachment again by the House of Representatives and his removal from office by the Senate,” unquote.

Last week, Trump told his supporters at a rally in Nevada that he, quote, “was entitled” to serve a third term, which is obviously a violation of the Constitution’s 22nd Amendment.

On Saturday, Trump suggested to his supporters in North Carolina that he might sign an executive order to prevent Joe Biden from becoming president.

Trump has also urged his supporters to become, quote, “poll watchers,” but what he is really saying is he wants his supporters, some of whom are members of armed militias, to intimidate voters. We’re already seeing this in Virginia, where early voters were confronted by Trump supporters, and election officials in Fairfax County said that some voters and polling staff felt intimidated.

On and on it goes.  Every day, over and over again, Trump is making it harder for the American people to participate in the political process and is attempting to delegitimize the outcome of this election so that if he loses he can remain in office.

The concerns that I am raising today are not just mine alone, and are not just concerns shared by progressives and Democrats.

Miles Taylor, a lifelong Republican who previously served as chief of staff inside the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security, warned that there is nothing that Trump will not do or say to defeat Biden.

“Put nothing past Donald Trump,” Taylor told The Associated Press. “He will do anything to win. If that means climbing over other people, climbing over his own people, or climbing over U.S. law, he will do it. People are right to be concerned.”

Well, I agree with Mr. Taylor. I am concerned. I am very concerned.

Last week, my former Senate colleague Dan Coats, Trump’s own former Director of National Intelligence, published a piece in the New York Times calling for a high-level bipartisan and nonpartisan commission to oversee the election to reassure all Americans that it has been carried out fairly. Coats wrote, quote, “The most urgent task American leaders face is to ensure that the election’s results are accepted as legitimate. Electoral legitimacy is the essential linchpin of our entire political culture. We should see the challenge clearly in advance and take immediate action to respond.”

I couldn’t agree more. I strongly second Director Coats’ call for this election commission.

Last week as well, Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and I sent a letter to Senator McConnell urging him to hold hearings on the issue of election and post-election security. Senator Schumer and I stated, “We would like to hear from the most knowledgeable people in the country as to how we can do everything possible to make sure that the election and the period afterward is secure and peaceful.”

Majority Leader McConnell: Please respond to that letter.  Please establish that bi-partisan committee.

And today I call on every elected official in America whether they be Republican, Democrat or Independent to vigorously oppose voter suppression and voter intimidation, to make sure that every vote is counted, and that no one is declared the winner until those votes are counted.

And to my Republican colleagues in the Congress please do not continue to tell the American people how much you love America if, at this critical moment, you are not prepared to stand up to defend American democracy and our way of life.  Stop the hypocrisy.

With or without Donald Trump this election is unique in American history because it’s taking place during a pandemic and a public health crisis.

As a result, states all over America are taking the appropriate steps to ensure more Americans can safely vote by mail in their own homes instead of risking their health or their lives to vote in person.

The result is that this election will see, by far, the largest number of mail in ballots ever.

And let’s be clear.  Despite what Donald Trump says, voting by mail is not a new or dangerous idea.  Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington and Utah conduct their elections almost entirely by mail.  California, Nevada, New Jersey, the District of Columbia and my state of Vermont have pledged to mail ballots to all registered voters for the upcoming election.  And many other states are making it easier to vote by mail. Trump himself, as well as members of his administration, have repeatedly voted by mail.  Members of the U.S. military have regularly voted by mail since the 1800s.

Given the significant increase in mail in ballots why, you might ask, are Trump and his allies trying to attack the integrity of our vote by mail system?

The answer is simple.  A number of studies have shown that for, whatever reasons, Republicans are more likely to vote in person while Democrats are more likely to use mail in ballots.

In fact, one poll found that only about a quarter of Biden supporters would vote in person on Election Day while some two thirds of Trump voters planned to vote in person.

In other words, if Trump can undermine people’s confidence in the validity of votes cast by mail, he will be calling into question the validity of votes that may overwhelmingly support Joe Biden.

Let us consider the following scenario:

On election night, Trump is ahead in many battleground states based on the votes of those who voted in person on election day.  All across the television screens people see Trump ahead before they turn in for the night.  But as more and more mail in ballots are counted, Trump’s lead falls.  Trump then announces, with no proof, that there has been massive mail in ballot fraud and that these votes should not be counted – and that he has won the election.

In other words, Trump may well announce that he has won the election before all of the votes are counted and that large numbers of mail in ballots should be discarded.

Furthermore, in states where Republicans control the legislature, it is possible that the election results will be ignored because of false accusations of voter fraud and that the legislature itself will use its power to appoint electors pledged to vote for Trump, overriding the will of the people.

And, in the midst of all of this, with the death of Justice Ginsburg, Trump is attempting to push through a Supreme Court Justice who may very well cast a vote in a case that will determine the outcome of this election.  He is doing that at a time when early voting has already begun and millions of ballots will have already been cast.

In this unprecedented moment what can we as a people do in the struggle to preserve American democracy?

First, it is absolutely imperative that we have, by far, the largest voter turnout in American history and that people vote as early as possible.

As someone who is strongly supporting Joe Biden, let’s be clear: A landslide victory for Biden will make it virtually impossible for Trump to deny the results and is our best means for defending democracy.

Second, with the pandemic and a massive increase in mail in voting, state legislatures must take immediate action now to allow mail in votes to be counted before Election Day – as they come in.

In fact, 32 states allow for the counting or processing of absentee ballots – verifying signatures for example – before Election Day.  All states should do the same.  The faster all ballots are counted, the less window there is for chaos and conspiracy theories.

Third, the news media needs to prepare the American people to understand there is no longer a single election day and that it is very possible that we may not know the results on November 3rd.

Fourth, social media companies must finally get their act together and stop people from using their tools to spread disinformation and to threaten and harass election officials.

Fifth, in the Congress and in state legislatures hearings must be held as soon as possible to explain to the public how the election day process and the days that follow will be handled.  As we count every vote, and prevent voter intimidation everything possible must be done to prevent chaos, disinformation, and even violence.

Lastly, and most importantly, the American people, no matter what their political persuasion, must make it clear that  American democracy will not be destroyed.  Our country from its inception and through the sacrifices of millions has been a model to the world with regard to representative government.  In 1863, in the midst of the terrible Civil War, Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg stated that this government “of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

That was true then. That is true today.  Regardless of what Donald Trump wants the American people will preserve democracy in our country.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg
03/15/1933 – 09/18/2020

Today a shining light of reason and caring died. No person could have come closer to being a force of nature than Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Others will do a much better job of writing her eulogy. Those who knew her will be more able to capture her indomitable spirit. Many will testify to the power of her personality. Millions will mourn her passing. She leaves us a much better world than when she arrived.

I can only say, that her death, after a heroic fight against cancer, leaves us all much poorer. With her light gone, the world grows darker.

You’ve done so much for us. We will not forget you. We will not give up the struggle that you fought for us. We will persevere and make the United States and the world a better place for all people.

Rest In Peace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The Man Who Would Be King

The COVID King

I’m reading 3 books right now; Conspiracy by Peter Strzok, Taking America Back For God by Andrew L. Whitehead and Samuel L. Perry, and Rage by Bob Woodward. I ordered Rage a week ago and it magically appeared on my Kindle overnight.

Conspiracy reads like a novel. It’s a well written account of Strzok’s time in FBI Counter Intelligence. He describes the behind the scenes debate that he and team had on whether to open an investigation of the President. As a group, they resisted starting such an an inquiry. However, the evidence gathered in probes of Trump associates was compelling and they were left with no choice but to go forward. President Trump was clearly compromised and, thus, a danger to the security of the United States. Strzok is candid about his feelings and thoughts.

In my frenzy for books, I also got Interview of Peter Strzok: Committee On The Judiciary, U.S. House Of Representatives which was part of the Hillary Clinton email hearings. The interview covers the role that Strzok played in the investigation and why Clinton was not found to have committed a crime. Because, I was more interested in Conspiracy, I skimmed the interview, looking for highlights. The interview is a treasure trove of information about Clinton’s handling of her emails, how the FBI conducted its investigation, the Republican’s tactics, and the intricate procedures of House proceedings. It’s a good reference.

Taking America Back For God is a compelling exploration of a segment of the Nationalist movement in America. Comprised of people from various backgrounds and with a variety of nationalist ideologies, this is a fascinating and disturbing world where the word Christian plays an important role that is more politically based than faith. Many but not all Evangelicals are a part of this crusade to create a white authoritarian nation. This book is chilling and yet mesmerizing.

Rage is off to a good start. If you’ve read any of Bob Woodward’s previous books it is clear that he is a meticulous reporter who substantiates his information. In his previous book about Trump, Fear, he delves into Trump’s first years as president and the machinations around the decision making. It is in this book that Trump lays it all bare when he said, “Real power is – I don’t even want to use the word – fear.” After the release of Fear, Trump was livid, until he talked with his staffers who told him that, indeed, the book was accurate and fair. That is the reason that Trump decided to talk with Woodward, 19 times for a total of about 9 hours.

Does anyone remember, All The President’s Men and The Final Days? Both were written with Carl Bernstein and both set a high standard for investigative reporting. Rage is another example of this kind of authoritative reporting.

About The Man Who Would Be King
I have been playing with some of my programs, learning bits and pieces through experimentation. The image above, is the result. I’ve got a variety of graphics and photo programs that I use to create images. I’m slowly learning the strengths of each and the effects they provide. I’m happiest when I’m learning new things. Often at the end of the day, I surprise myself with what my muses have urged me to do.

9/11 And A Traitor Is President

Today is 9/11. Nineteen years ago, today, the United States was attacked, and 3,000 Americans died. Since then at least another 3,000 have died due to exposure to toxic substances released by the destruction of the Twin Towers. This day is an open wound for those who watched the tragedy unfold and a dark cloud over those born since then.

At that time, as the world joined us in a rare show of solidarity, there was a moment when the US had the opportunity to change the course of history towards a more promising future. But George W Bush, President 43, chose to other direction. He rebuffed all offers of help, and barely acknowledged the kindness expressed towards us. Instead, he set us track to start an illegal war that continues to smolder in the mid-East and around the world. He was warned that his actions would bring on a disaster, he ignored the warnings, and disaster followed.

And now, on the eve of the most important election in our nation’s history, we observe this fateful day with another President in office who is unarguably far worse that Bush 43. Trump is a direct inheritor of the forces that got 43 elected and turned his administration into a catastrophe. Today, on the stage set by 43, President 45 is in the final steps of wrecking our nation and democracy.

Trump should not be allowed to set foot on the hallowed ground at the 9/11 monument and park. He has not earned the right to represent the American people on this day of remembering. He is a traitor to the US, in word and deed.

The last two weeks, started with Jeffrey Goldberg’s article in The Atlantic, exposing Trump’s disrespect for our military and his diseased psychology. These revelations continue to be confirmed by other news outlets, including Fox News*. Then, two days ago, the New York Times and Washington Post began reporting on the contents of Bob Woodward’s new book, Rage, which is based on 18 interviews that he had with Trump, we learn that Trump was fully aware of the dangers of the coronavirus in February. Yet he continued to mislead the American people up until the present and the release of Woodward’s book. These conversations were taped, and segments are available online.

*Fox reporter Jennifer Griffin reported that anonymous sources challenged the portion of the Atlantic article about his canceling his trip to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery but did substantiate the bit related to there being no security risk to drive there. These sources said Trump was in a bad mood because of comments made by French President Macron and simply did not want to go. A third unnamed source confirmed what Trump had said about the Vietnam War. ““It was a stupid war. Anyone who went was a sucker.”

Trump’s behavior since before his election in 2016, brings into clear focus his treacherous intent. His colluding with the Russians, openly at times and covertly at others, is clearly described in numerous books written by FBI officers and people within the Trump
administration. His treachery continues today. He is blocking the distribution to local and state security officials, National Security Alerts that describe Russian attacks on our election, both meddling with election infrastructure and spreading disinformation favoring Trump. Indeed. He is doing the same to the House and Senate.

Trump vigorously echoes the Russian propaganda daily. Repeating Russian disinformation and not alerting the nation to the origin of these lies is an open acknowledgement of collusion with our enemy, Russia. It is treason.

During his administration, Trump has steadily torn down the US and made us extremely vulnerable to the actions of Russia and other powers. He has repeatedly acted to undermine our relationships with our closest allies. This weakens organizations like NATO, which defends Europe from Russian aggression, as in Ukraine, and empowers Russia.

Trump wrecked the Iranian Nuclear Agreement with Iran which was succeeding despite what he and his followers said. It was so successful that our European partners in the agreement, struggled to maintain it without the US. Iran continued to observe the agreement for a while, but Trump’s aggressive rhetoric and actions pushed them to restart their nuclear programs. By stepping away from a legal agreement, Trump undermined our credibility as a trustworthy partner in international agreements. Other actions tarnished our honor even further.

The betrayal of the Kurdish people is a chilling example of Trump’s treachery. The Kurds were premier soldiers that did the most as an ally to defeat ISIS. Courageous and honorable they took the fight to the Terrorists and to the dictator of Syria, Al Asad. With enemies on all sides, Syria, and Turkey, it was the US that held them at bay and allowed the Kurds to find a place that they at least could call home. They depended on us for their safety. In October of last year, Trump abruptly ordered all US forces out of the Kurdish area. There was no time for the Kurds to prepare. Literally on the heels of withdrawing American forces, Turkish troops swarmed in. And a brutal onslaught ensued. Syria too, with Russian support overwhelmed Kurdish forces driving them back into a narrow buffer zone between Syria and Turkey. Today, the Kurds have renounced their allegiance to the US and struggle to exist as a people.

One consequence of the defeat of the Kurds, was what happened to the tens-of-thousands of ISIS warriors and their families that the Kurds were guarding. During the war, the Kurds were given the unwelcome task of guarding captured terrorists and their families because of their loyalty and honor. When Syria and Turkey overran the Kurds the prisons and camps were left unguarded and ISIS slipped away to regroup. In a few fateful days, we lost the War on Terror. Who benefited? Russia, by gaining significantly more power in the mid-East and Turkey by gaining more leverage over the Kurdish people who they have been oppressing for decades. In addition, Turkey has become closer to Russia and more hostile toward US interests. That was less than a year ago.

There are many more examples, such as North Korea. In four years, Trump has done an amazing job at destroying the United States premier position in the world. At home he has turned once patriotic Americans into unwitting allies of the Russians and driven a deep wedge into the solidarity of the nation. A division that may bring Americans to blows against each other.

Trump has turned us into a third-world country. As the election approaches, Russia, China, and other players, are choosing sides and trying to use Americans as proxy agents to influence the election and get what they think will be the best outcome for their geopolitical goals. Who benefits? Russia prefers that Trump win because he has been successful at spreading chaos and undermining all democratic nations around the world. Trump’s antagonism with China helps Russia fend off the growing threat along its southeastern borders. China’s economy dwarfs Russia’s. China’s rapid modernization of its
military poses risks to Russia. However, it does not matter who wins the coming election because the US will continue to weaken, and US policy will continue to oppose Chinese goals.

Trump is a traitor, in word and deed. His actions clearly demonstrate that he has betrayed our country and each American.

Today is 9/11. We look back at a day when 3,000 Americans perished and with them the belief in American invulnerability. Today, nineteen years late, America is vulnerable to the whims of a traitorous President who is a puppet of Vladimir Putin and Russia. Oh, how the mighty have
fallen.

In 52 days, we vote. Regardless of the barriers Trump throws up, such as destroying the US Post Office, or threats by him and his traitorous allies that are working in all levels of government, vote. Our Founders committed their lives and wealth to creating a freer nation. They knew that if they failed, they would lose both. Can we do any less? Herd Immunity

I Am Not Amused

The Coronavirus has been killing Americans for the last half a year. The United States has the worst outbreak in the world with over 6,100,000 people infected and 186,000 dead. In the next 30 days, infections are forecast to climb to 7,360,000 and deaths to 206,000.

Another way to visualize the enormity of this disaster is by comparisons.

Viet Nam War, 11 years, total killed and missing 60,000.
Coronavirus, 6 months, 186,000 dead, 3 times more.

9/11, one day 3,000 dead, plus at least 3000 collateral deaths since then. Total 6,000+.
Coronavirus 31 times more.

Automobile deaths, 2019, 38,800, reduction of 2% from 2018.
Coronavirus, 4.7 times more.
|
War on Terror, 19 years, currently 7000, confirmed by US Central Command.
Coronavirus, 6 months, 26 times more.

Hospitalizations

Currently there are 894,000 non-ICU coronavirus patients. They make up 15% of the non-ICU population in the US. Current national non-ICU capacity is at 109%

Now there are 298,000 ICU coronavirus patients. National ICU capacity is at 325%.

The coronavirus is pushing our health system well beyond its limits. What happens when a new surge of the virus comes in a few weeks or flu season starts?

It is Going to Get Worse

It is about to get much worse due to Trump’s decision to experiment with herd immunity. Trump understands this. To make certain that the public does not know the extent of this catastrophe, he has ordered that testing be reduced and access to information about the pandemic, limited even further than it is has been.

This is already apparent on the web page United States COVID-19 Statistics which provides authoritative information about the coronavirus. In the past 2 days, the graphs for Testing have gone blank. The government is no longer supplying that data. Without it there is no way to get a sense of the scope of infections or where hot spots are occurring. Most importantly, it is now impossible to determine how virulent the virus is. Does it kill 1%, 2% or 5% of those infected?

Herd Immunity

The idea behind herd immunity is that a group of animals develop a collective natural resistance to a disease after a certain percentage of them have been exposed, survived, and developed antibodies that protect them from re-infection. The higher number of immune members the more difficult it is for the disease to spread, and the not immune members are less likely to get sick. This works provided the disease spreads slowly, allowing the survivor’s immunity to act as a barrier to further infections.

Animals protect themselves from disease through social behavior. They detect and avoid the sick, isolating the disease and limiting its ability to spread. Again, this only works if the disease spreads slowly. If the illness spreads without symptoms, the animals continue with their typical behaviors and an epidemic ensues. Herd immunity fails. It is important to note, that the coronavirus spreads quickly and, in many cases, without symptoms.

In a nutshell, herd immunity works by isolating the vulnerable using the survivors and dead as shields.

Herd Immunity Will Not Work

Around the world and here in the US there are cases of re-infection, with the number growing. The Coronavirus is not stable. At first, it was thought that the virus was a single strain, but it is not. It mutates at an alarming rate and, in the time that it has been spreading, it has changed repeatedly. At the outset, here in the US, the virus appeared on both coasts almost simultaneously. One arriving from Asia and the other from Europe. They were genetically different. In the time that the virus left China and spread around the world before arriving here, it had mutated several times.

Viral Russian Roulette

When a virus mutates its characteristics change. A virus can collect genetic material from its surroundings. Different types of virus can exchange traits, such as drug resistance. The virus can become less infectious or more, less deadly, or more. Mutation is a form of Russian roulette. We are familiar with the flu and how every year vaccines must change to meet the threats of that year’s mix of old and new flu strains.

Herd immunity does not protect against mutations. The herd must go through the same process of illness and death, as it did before, to develop a herd resistance to the new disease.

In addition, there is the question, what type of immunity can you develop with the coronavirus? The polio vaccine provides a lifetime immunity. But with tetanus the immunity lasts about 10 years before a booster vaccination is needed. Flu vaccines must be updated every year. The growing number of re-infections may indicate that the virus’s immunity is short-lived.

No Geographical Separation

Mountains, rivers, and oceans no longer separate us. Distance and geography no longer provide natural barriers that provide defensive isolation. Since the collapse of the shelter at home regulations, Americans have gone back to doing what humans love to do, getting up close and personal. Spring Break and Sturgis are examples of people going thousands of miles to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

This socialization, along with the refusal to wear masks and social distance, has led to a huge growth of infections and deaths. When the virus first came to the US, in February, it spread rapidly. State governments scrambled to find a way to combat it. By mid-April daily infections averaged 29,000 with deaths 2,600. Many states issued shelter at home orders. Within a couple of weeks, the rapidly rising rates plateaued and began to come down. Herd social behavior worked.

In mid-June, states began relaxing their orders. By mid-July, two weeks after the 4th of July, daily infections had risen 67,000 with deaths 900. Since then daily infections appear to have plateaued again, this time at 41,000 with deaths 860.

Long-term Effects

After a disease has swept through a herd, the survivors continue following their instinctive behaviors. Any animals that were weakened or impaired by the disease still must keep up with the herd for social benefits and safety from predators. If they cannot, they will die. For herd animals, the long-term effects of a disease are short-term.

As the coronavirus has burned through America, it has become apparent that it is not like the flu. For many, recovery can take months and during that time the patient requires care and medical attention. Worse, long-term, or permanently debilitating conditions may be the virus’s legacy. Here too, medical treatment and therapy may be required. This places an added demand on our healthcare system.

Humans have a natural inclination not to march on and allow our ill and infirm to fall by the wayside to perish. Or, at least not until recently.

Why Shelter at Home, Masks and Social Distancing?

The purpose of sheltering at home and the other safety practices is not to prevent the wide spread of the illness but rather slow its spread so that our health system will not be overwhelmed and unable to properly care for the people hospitalized. In addition, sheltering, masks, and distancing, gives nursing and retirement facilities the ability to limit the potential for the virus to spread through their vulnerable populations. These behaviors are intended to keep the rate of infection at a level where the sick can receive the best care which increases their rate of survival and reduces the long-term effects during and after recovery.

Effective healthcare requires that the doctors, nurses, social workers, and everyone else providing care, be adequately protected, rested, and mentally resilient. We can see that our healthcare system is being pushed to the breaking point. Our front-line defenders are battered. Many have gotten ill themselves and 1079 have died. The emotional toll of being surrounded by suffering and death is immense. For many PTSD is the price. These people are genuine heroes and they are exhausted. They need our help.

This Disaster Is Man Made

This pandemic did not need to happen. In 2016 during the transition between the Obama and Trump administrations, President Obama gave Trump the “Playbook For Early Response To High Consequence Emerging Infectious Disease Threats and Biological Incidents” which had been created by the National Security Council. It was ignored. When the pandemic reached the US, questions about the playbook arose, but Trump and Mitch McConnell claimed that no such document existed.

Then, in 2018, as a cost saving measure, Trump through John Bolton, removed the senior director of the NSC’s Global Health and Bio-defense Team, who was responsible for countering pandemics. They then reorganized (disbanded) the team and removed a homeland security advisor who had been urging strong defenses against bio-warfare and infectious diseases. These positions and functions remain empty today. Because of this there was neither the organization nor expertise in place to combat the coronavirus when it arrived.

From the start, the federal government, controlled by Trump and the Republican Party, have done little to protect us from the scourge of the virus. Indeed, often Trump and his administration have worked at odds to our well-being. Unwilling to use the legal powers of the federal government to organize a coherent nation-wide response to the disease, individual states have been left to fend for themselves. A major obstacle to states efforts to combat the virus is that many states are controlled by Republican governments who follow the direction of Trump and neglect the health of their citizens. Also, Trump and his administration have both downplayed the severity of the pandemic and promoted dangerous behaviors and unproven quick fixes that have killed people. Currently he is pushing for herd immunity, a stand back and do-nothing approach, and promising a vaccine within two months, which is impossible if sound scientific and medical procedures are followed.

To make matters worse, Trump blocked the free flow of information that, if available, could have reduced the severity of the contagion, saving tens of thousands of lives. Trump’s actions have spread misery and grief across the US, torn our social fabric to pieces, and devastated our economy. He has reduced us to the level of a third-world country.

A Terrifying New Reality

In the last two days, information about Trump’s psychological make up has come to light and it is terrifying. Reports are surfacing concerning Trump’s inability to understand or express certain basic human emotions such as altruism, empathy or sympathy. He has demeaned veterans and our war dead, calling them losers and suckers. He has expressed his mystification at why anyone would be a public servant without a rich reward or would sacrifice themselves for the common good.

People mean nothing to Trump. We are objects to be moved and sacrificed for his own good. This explains his criminal neglect during this crisis. It also clarifies his attitudes toward democracy, law and order, and we the American People. Trump and those that enable him are a real danger to our nation and to each of us as individuals. Trump has no loyalty and everyone of us is expendable.

What to Do?

It is simple and it is hard. We must regain our moral balance. We are not chess pieces on a checkered board. We do hold our destiny in our hands. How we react to the coronavirus is a model for how we approach the rest of our challenges. We can embrace self-discipline and refrain from activities that we naturally want to do. It is not someone else telling us what to do. It is us deciding to respect ourselves and others and doing the right thing.

We are not alone. We are members of the American family with 330,000,000 relatives. We help each other, we respect each other, and we sacrifice for each other.

Masks and social distancing are a start. We can choose to avoid gatherings where masks and distancing are not observed. We show respect towards our families and friends and act in ways that do not put them at risk. If another shelter at home order is necessary, we can observe it to honor everyone around us.

We can stay informed through credible sources that are fact-based, scientifically accurate.

We can say NO to coldblooded schemes that nonchalantly discard the lives of thousands of members of our American family.

We can remember that sacrificing our comfort for others is noble and honorable. These may seem to be antiquated values, but they enhance our lives in unique ways. Through them we build character and elevate our spirits. We become better people than we were before.

Finally, we can engage in the struggle to make certain that our government treats all of us with respect. That means organizing a real national response to fighting the virus and not willing sacrificing more lives. It means that the necessary financial resources are provided to each American to help all of us get through this crisis without loosing homes or jobs. It means that we protect our right to vote and ensure that no one is excluded. It means that we respect and honor the promise of our United States and that we do all that we can to remove Trump and his supporters from every elected office in the nation.

It means we renew our faith in the United States and our future.

Playbook For Early Response To High Consequence Emerging Infectious Disease Threats and Biological Incidents
This document was created in 2016, during the Obama administration, by the National Security Council, with the goal of assisting leaders, “in coordinating a complex U.S. Government response to a high-consequence emerging disease threat anywhere in the world.” It was given to Trump during the transition of administrations. However, Trump and Mitch McConnell denied that such a document existed until 03/2020 when Politico released it.
